Dr. Polvino, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), joined Veloxis in September 2009. Dr. Polvino leads the activities for Veloxis in the US and is responsible for the clinical and regulatory group, including medical affairs, as well as business development activities. Dr. Polvino brings extensive experience in the senior management of pharmaceutical companies together with solid experience in clinical as well as product development.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Polvino was CEO at Helsinn Therapeutics (US), Inc (a private company). In his capacity as the President and CEO of Sapphire Therapeutics, Inc, he successfully sold the company to Helsinn Therapeutics (US) in January 2009.
Dr. Polvino began his career as an MD from UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, US. He joined the life sciences industry in 1991, upon following training in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and a fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology at the National Institutes of Health, US.
Dr. Polvino had various positions of increasing responsibility within clinical research, drug development, and executive functions at Merck, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals (now Pfizer Inc), and Theravance, Inc, until he joined Sapphire Therapeutics in 2002.
Peter G. Nielsen
Executive Vice President of Pharmaceutical Development and Chemistry Manufacturing and Control
In his position as Executive Vice President of Pharmaceutical Development & Chemistry Manufacturing and CMC, Mr. Nielsen is responsible for pharmaceutical development and manufacturing activities. He joined Veloxis in 2007 and has extensive experience in research and development on biotechnological and small-molecule projects, including protein delivery and solid-dosage forms.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Nielsen served as Corporate Vice President at Novo Nordisk A/S, where he managed 250 employees and was responsible for formulation development and clinical supplies (logistics, packaging, and shipment). He also served at Novo Nordisk A/S as Vice President responsible for other CMC development activities, including analytical and drug substance development within both biotechnology products and NCEs.
Mr. Nielsen began his career as a chemist for the Danish Ministry of the Environment and later became Manager of Analytical Development at Ferrosan.
His MSc degree in Biochemistry is from the University of Copenhagen.
Johnny Stilou
Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Stilou joined Veloxis in April 2008. He is responsible for the activities within Finance, IT, Legal Affairs, and Investor Relations.
Prior to joining Veloxis, Mr. Stilou held a number of CFO positions with international technology and Medicare companies.
Mr. Stilou began his career with KPMG in Denmark in 1986. From 1995, he held various senior finance positions within the GN Great Nordic group until 2003.
Mr. Stilou holds a Master of Science in Economics and Business Administration from the Copenhagen Business School.
Timothy C. Melkus
Senior Vice President, Development Operations
Mr. Melkus joined Veloxis in February 2010. He is responsible for Clinical Operations, Clinical Supply, Regulatory Affairs, and Quality Assurance.
Prior to joining Veloxis, Mr. Melkus held the position of Senior Vice President, Business Development and Operations, for IDM Pharma, Inc, where he led small-molecule and cell therapy Manufacturing, Quality Operations, Process Development, Business Development, and Intellectual Property. He was a key member of the executive turnaround team that achieved EU approval for IDM Pharma's lead oncology compound and subsequently sold the company to Takeda Pharmaceuticals.
Mr. Melkus began his career with Searle Pharmaceuticals in 1984 where he held a number of increasingly responsible positions in a variety of functions. After leaving Searle in 1998, Mr. Melkus formed a boutique health care consulting practice focusing on strategic and tactical planning, business development, manufacturing strategy, trade relations, and channel management. Clients included MedPointe, Merisant, NeoPharm, Pharmacia, Serono, and US Pharmacopeia.
Mr. Melkus earned his Master of Business Administration degree from the Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management and his Bachelor of Science degree from Northwestern University.
Edward Koval
Senior Vice President, Business Development and Strategic Corporate Development
Mr. Koval, Senior Vice President of Business Development and Strategic Corporate Development, joined Veloxis in July 2010. Mr. Koval leads the company's partnering activities and serves a key role in strategic corporate business transactions including Veloxis fundraising initiatives. He brings extensive industry experience in identifying, negotiating, executing, and managing strategic alliances spanning the full range of transactions from license agreements and collaborations to joint ventures and M&A (from both the buy and sell sides).
Mr. Koval began his career as an engineer with General Electric before transitioning into pharmaceutical finance, strategy, business/corporate development, and liaison management functions. He held positions of increasing responsibility at Merck, Chiron, and Variagenics. Most recently, he served as Vice President, Business Development and Alliance Management in the Novartis cardiovascular-metabolic, neuroscience, and vaccine business units. In addition, on numerous occasions, Mr. Koval provided consulting services to various start-up biotechnology firms seeking financing, business development, and corporate development advice.
Mr. Koval received his Bachelor's degree from New York University, his Master's degree in Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and his MBA degree from the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Dr. John Weinberg
Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations and Investor Relations
Dr. Weinberg joined Veloxis in July 2010. He is responsible for managing all Commercial activities supporting the Veloxis portfolio of compounds in development. Additionally, Dr. Weinberg directs Corporate Strategy and Pipeline Target Identification.
Prior to joining Veloxis, Dr. Weinberg was Business Franchise Head at Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation in the transplant and infectious disease business unit. In this capacity, he successfully managed and grew the US Transplant business.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Weinberg served as Oncology Business Unit Head at Enzon Pharmaceuticals, Inc, from 2003 to 2005. From 1996 to 2003, Dr. Weinberg held various positions of increasing responsibility within the Global Marketing function at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, successfully managing brands across multiple therapeutic areas, including oncology, hematology, transplantation, and autoimmune diseases.
Dr. Weinberg received his MD degree from the University of the Witwatersrand School of Medicine, Johannesburg, South Africa, and his MBA degree from INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France.
Anja Leschly
Vice President Human Resources & Communication
Mrs. Leschly joined Veloxis in January 2008. She is responsible for the activities within Human Resources and Communications. Prior to joining Veloxis, Mrs. Leschly held a number of HR positions within pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry and IT/consulting companies. From 2000 and until now, Mrs. Leschly has held various HR management positions within the international pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry. Mrs. Leschly holds a BA of Education from N. Zahles Copenhagen, Denmark.
